Conventional LCD’s utilise 8 bit processing producing a palette of approximately 16.7 million colours. Unfortunately it will dither colours in its palette to create a near approximation of the colours it doesn't have in its palette which leads to colour banding. 8 Bit + FRC giving effect of a 10 Bit – a pixel is rapidly switched between two adjacent colours to give the impression of the wanted colour (dithering). Processing with 10 bit creates a palette with more than a billion colours eliminating the problem of colour banding.
