WEEE

The EU Directive on "Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment" (WEEE) has come into affect across Europe.

The WEEE Directive will require separately collected waste electronics to be recycled and material recovered in line with the product category targets. The major responsibility for recycling obligations are on manufacturers, national sales offices and importers, termed as 'Producers'.

Toshiba recognise the importance of this new legislation and has added the following symbol to its products in accordance with the WEEE Directive:

The use of the symbol is only valid in European Union member states and indicates that this product may not be treated as household waste. By ensuring this product is disposed of correctly, you will help prevent potential negative consequences for the environment and human health, which could otherwise be caused by inappropriate waste handling of this product.

If the old electrical equipment is from non-commercial use (also termed 'private user') more detailed information about disposing of this product is available by contacting your local city office, your household waste disposal service or the shop where you purchased the product. Across Europe there will be the option to discard old Toshiba products free of charge at municipal or designated collection points, from where producers or schemes will take responsibility for onward treatment.

For electrical equipment from a commercial or business user, please contact the retailer or the Toshiba sales outlet you purchased it from originally. In EU member states where we have a registered sales office we operate bespoke take-back services for our direct business user customers.

RoHS

New EU legislation on the make-up and recycling of electrical products has forced the technology industry to move environmental issues to the very top of its agenda. Various legislation and directives are currently being implemented across EU member countries with the aim of reducing the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment and chemicals that go into land fill sites.

As part of this activity, a major piece of legislation came into effect on 1st July 2006 known as the EU Directive on "Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances in electrical and electronic equipment" (RoHS). This Directive states that after July 1, 2006, most new electrical and electronic equipment cannot be sold in the EU if it contains any of the following substances (above specific concentrations (w/w)) at homogeneous material level:

- Lead (0.1%) - Mercury (0.1%) - Cadmium (0.01%) - Hexavalent Chromium (0.1%) - Polybrominated biphenyls (PBB) (0.1%) - Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE) (0.1%)

Each EU member state is required to implement local legislation to enforce the EU RoHS Directive.

The Toshiba group has set itself standards further to this and related global legislation.

Batteries

The EU Battery-Directive (91//157/EEC) requires Member States to organize the separate collection of batteries that contain dangerous substances such as mercury, cadmium, and lead. In some countries, the producer was required to organize and finance the waste management of used batteries containing dangerous substances.

With the new Battery Directive (2006/66/EC) which must be implemented by all EU Member States by September 2008, all batteries must be collected even if they do not contain dangerous substances.

Battery producers who wish to import batteries to the EU must register with EU Member States.

Making of Batteries

From September 26, 2008 every battery must be marked with the crossed-out wheeled waste bin symbol. In addition, a marking with the chemical symbol (Hg, Cd, Pb) is required for batteries containing more than 0,0005% mercury (Hg), more than 0,002% cadmium (Cd) and/or more than 0,004% lead (Pb).

Used batteries should not be treated as household waste and should be collected separately. By ensuring correct disposal of your batteries, you will help prevent potential negative consequences for the environment and human health, which could otherwise be caused by inappropriate waste handling of batteries.

For more detailed information about the collection and recycling programmes available in your country, please contact your local city office or the shop where you purchased the product.
